Gallmau
GALLMAU
Le Gallmau est une interprétation typographique libre de l’onciale que l’on observe sur les manuscrits enluminés irlandais et anglais à partir du VIIe siècle. Les moines ne se contentent pas de recopier l’onciale romaine, ils créent une écriture propre, la semi-onciale insulaire, qui intègre à l’alphabet latin des influences de l’art païen celte et anglais. Parmi les plus beaux manuscrits qui nous sont parvenus, le Livre de Durrow (664–700), les Évangiles de Lindisfarne (700) et le Livre de Kells (Iona et Kells 800). Les signes partagent la même hauteur, le tracé général est fluide et certaines paires de lettres sont attachées, créant ainsi une remarquable régularité des lignes. De l’onciale, le Gallmau conserve les liaisons entre les signes et la possibilité de composer indifféremment avec des formes majuscules ou minuscules. En revanche, la chasse change – le module est plus étroit, permettant une composition plus compacte des mots – et les effets de pleins et déliés provoqués par la plume sont gommés au profit d’une graphie monolinéaire plus contemporaine.

GALLMAU
Gallmau is a free typographic interpretation of the uncial found on Irish and English illuminated manuscripts from the 7th century onwards. The monks not only copied the Roman uncial, but also created their own script, the insular semi-uncial, which incorporated influences from pagan Celtic and English art into the Latin alphabet. Among the finest surviving manuscripts are the Book of Durrow (664–700), the Lindisfarne Gospels (700) and the Book of Kells (Iona and Kells 800). The signs share the same height, the general layout is fluid and certain pairs of letters are attached, creating a remarkable regularity of lines. From the uncial, Gallmau retains the links between signs and the possibility of composing indifferently with upper or lower case forms. On the other hand, the stroke changes – the module is narrower, allowing to set the words in a compact way – and the full and loose effects caused by the quill are erased in favor of a more contemporary monolinear script.
